Elche

Located 15km from Santa Pola is Elche, the palm tree capital of Europe with nearly 200,000 palm trees. You must visit the Huerto del Cura Botanical Garden and take the Rio Safari boat tour. See the 15th century Altamira Palace, St. Mary's Basilica, site of the enactment of the religious dramas, Calahorra Tower, part of the ramparts dating from the 12th century, the Arab Baths in the 16th century convent and the Town Hall whose door dates from 1441.

The municipal park in Elche is a wonderful place to enjoy both the sun and the shade. The park is filled with tall palms, water features, band stands and much more. On the other side of the road is the outdoor swimming pool and the sports park where all manner of sports take place.
